Water covers 75% of the Earth’s surface, and it is estimated that humans have only explored
around 5% of the ocean. We actually know less about our oceans than we know about our solar
system! The ocean is home to millions of different species that are constantly interacting with
one another. However, the ocean ecosystem is under constant stress from human activity that
includes ocean acidification, temperature rise, overfishing, coral destruction, and pollution. In
this lesson, mentees will explore the effects of human activity on the food web as well as model
some of the simplest organisms in the sea, plankton.
S809: Astroworld in Splash Fall 2021 (Oct. 30, 2021)
Students will be exploring space travel and settlements. The lesson covers the process of reaching a planet and sustaining life on it then goes into interstellar exploration.
S624: Genetics in Splash Fall 2020 (Oct. 31, 2020)
In this lesson, students will be delving into genetics and DNA. The students will first explore natural selection through a simulation, then create a DNA model to learn about the structure of DNA and the pairing of nucleotides. By the end of the lesson, students will have a general understanding of the structure, components, and importance of DNA, as well as how natural selection influences
our genetics.
