Frequently Asked Questions

Spring 2021 Program, COVID-19 Updated

What is Splash?
Splash is an educational outreach program in which university students teach classes to 9th through 12th graders. Splash at Berkeley is completely student-organized and run. The details of the classes being taught, including duration, topic, size, and difficulty/prerequisites, are all determined by the teachers themselves. Topics range from Introduction to Particle Physics, to The Study of Kafka, from Introduction to Japanese to Survival Skills 101. See the course catalog for details for Spin 2018 or Fall 2018 for examples. Splash seeks students who are internally driven to learn. We want to give them a unique opportunity to explore a passion and/or learn something outside of the ordinary curriculum. Students are given the freedom to choose their own classes and pick their own schedule.

When is Splash at Berkeley?
The next Splash at Berkeley will be Saturday, March 13, 2021. It will be held from 10 am PST to 5 pm PST.

Where is Splash at Berkeley?
Splash at Berkeley will be held online through zoom due to COVID-19 protocol.

How do I use zoom?/I cannot connect to my zoom room?
All students who are registered for a class will get an email the day before the program with the zoom links for their classes. Students will need to have access to a zoom account. Accounts can be made by going to https://www.zoom.us/.

When will student registration start?
Student registration for the Spring Program begins February 18, 2021. We will be sending out reminder emails to everyone who has created a student account on our website.

What are the new updates regarding COVID-19?
Having our program in-person would be unsafe due to UC Berkeley regulationsCity of Berkeley, and California State regulations. To keep the safety of every child in mind, we will be holding Splash online through Zoom. We will also continue to have the parent program and all classes with zoom links provided to students. We also know that your student's education is important and the Splash Admin Team is working very hard to make sure we are making all resources accessible starting with making the fee $0. We thank you for your patience as we work through this difficult time.

Why aren't you accepting middle school (grades 8 and below) students?
Due to liability reasons, we won't be accepting middle school students into our program. Please do not email us asking for an exception, we cannot provide this. COVID-19 Update: We are still unable to provide slots for any child under 9th grade regardless of the program going online.

Will you be providing lunches for students?
Due to the program going online, we will not be providing lunch at this time.

Will you be providing lunches for teachers?
Due to the program going online, we will not be providing lunch at this time.

Is day-of registration allowed?
Day-of registration is not allowed. The portal will close on March 11, 2021.

Can I take a class outside of my grade level?
Teachers use their best judgment to set the grade ranges for their classes, so we generally do not allow students to sign up for classes recommended for grades other than their own. However, if you have a truly compelling reason to take such a class, you (not your parents) can email us with which class you want to take and why you want to take it. We will occasionally make exceptions on a case-by-case basis with the consultation of the course instructor.

Do I have to fill every time slot with a class?
Nope. If you only available at certain time blocks, that’s fine as long as you sign in and sign out with an admin. You do not have to sign up for a class every period. If you don’t see any class that looks interesting, it’s not a problem; in fact, we encourage you not to attend any class that does not appeal to you. All that said, students find the day more fulfilling if they take as many interesting classes as possible.

What should I bring on the day of the program?
Since the program will be online, please make sure you have access to a computer/tablet, internet and have filled out the appropriate forms ahead of time.

What is the cost of the program?
The cost for this semester will be $0 for the program. However if you would like to make a donation to Learning Unlimited you may do so through the student portal.
