Brief Biographical Sketch:

I'm a grad student joint between USA and Britain researching the evolution and ecology of infectious diseases, applying theory to preventing honeybee deaths. I'm also a beekeeper.

I've been teaching biology and math classes since 2012, and act a certified beekeeping examiner in the US. I moved here from England in March of this year, and do part of my work in Atlanta, GA.

Ask me about insects, evolution, disease, conservation, or baking.

S222: It's not Easy Being Queen: Basics of Bee Biology in Splash Fall 2016 (Nov. 19, 2016)
“If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.” This above - and mostly nonsense - quotation is apocryphally attributed to Albert Einstein. Whilst unfortunately false, what is the truth about our reliance on bees for the food we eat? Why are people worried all the bees are dying? What even is a bee? This class will delivery a whistle-stop tour of all things bee. Covering bee evolution, identification, modern beekeeping, and the role of bees in human societies. Recommended for anyone with interests in evolution, ecology, disease, agriculture, or people considering beekeeping as a career choice.
